Andrea Bruce ist US-amerikanische Dokumentarfotografin. Anfangs als „normale“ Fotografin tätig, entschied sich die Amerikanerin nach den Ereignissen des 11. September 2001 dazu, Kriegsfotografin zu werden. Sie wurde u.a. von der Washington Post engagiert, um vermehrt in den Irak und nach Afghanistan zu reisen und den Alltag der Menschen zu dokumentieren, die im Kriegsgebiet leben. Erst im vergangenen Jahr reiste sie nach Rumänien, um die Opfer der Sex Sklaverei zu treffen und zu fotografieren – zumeist minderjährige Mädchen, die über Nacht aus ihren Dörfern verschwinden und in die Hauptstadt Bukarest oder ins Ausland gebracht werden.
Bruce befasst sich mit sozialen Spannungsverhältnissen, welche oftmals durch Kriegsbeginn entfacht wurden und in den Medien untergehen. Ihre Werke sind vielfach prämiert und wurden international ausgestellt. Ausgezeichnet wurde sie u.a. von der White House New Photographers Association, bei der sie viermal zur Fotografin des Jahres gewählt wurde. Sie erhielt mehrere Preise des International Pictures of the Year Contest und der John Faber Award des Overseas Press Club in New York. Ihr großes Engagement brachte der Fotografin letztes Jahr ein Nieman Stipendium der Harvard University ein.
Als Kriegsfotografin begleitet sie und ihr Team die ständige Bedrohung von Kidnapping, Gewalt oder Tod. Abhalten konnte das von ihrer Arbeit aber nicht – im Gegenteil: die Amerikanerin versucht sogar andere Frauen dazu zu motivieren, selbst als Dokumentarfotografinnen zu arbeiten.
Bruce lebt derzeit in Mexico City.
